Kanorado Volunteer Fire Department

Kanorado Fire Station #3 proudly serves as the western hub of Sherman County Rural Fire Protection District #1. Located on Main Street in Kanorado, this station plays a vital role in protecting the community and the many travelers who pass through on I-70 and Highway 27.  Kanorado Fire Station #3 is staffed by dedicated volunteer firefighters who respond to emergencies across the western region of Sherman County.

The Sherman County Rural Fire Protection District was organized in 1968 and is governed by a five-member Fire Board appointed by the Sherman County Commission. Collectively, the department averages around 300 fire and rescue calls each year, protecting nearly 1,000 square miles and a population of about 5,917.

Kanorado’s firefighters receive $28 per call or training, with additional hourly pay if the event lasts more than three hours. Members are also covered with life insurance and disability benefits through the Kansas State Firefighters Relief Program and may qualify for a pension/retirement after 20 years of service.

Kanorado Fire Station #3 holds an ISO (Insurance Services Office) Public Protection Classification of 6, reflecting its strong commitment to fire protection and community safety. While Kanorado is the primary response station for the western region, it also works closely with Goodland Fire Station #2 and Brewster Fire Station #1 through mutual aid, ensuring that all of Sherman County is covered when emergencies arise.
